ভারতে চৈনিক তীর্থ-ভ্রমণকারীদের মধ্যে সর্বপ্রথম যাঁর বিবরণী পাওয়া যায়, তিনি হচ্ছেন ফা-হিয়েন। পাঁচ শতকের সূচনায় তিনি ভারত ভ্রমণ করেন। এ সময় গুপ্ত বংশীয়রা বাংলার অংশবিশেষসহ ভারত শাসন করছিলেন। ফা-হিয়েন ৩৯৯ খ্রিস্টাব্দে চীন থেকে যাত্রা শুরু করেন এবং ১৪ বছর পর আবার চীনে ফিরে যান।
