প্রাচীন ইউরোপ, এশিয়া ও মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের মানুষের ধাতুগত সাংস্কৃতিক উন্নয়নের তৃতীয় পর্যায় হলো ব্রোঞ্জ যুগ। এ যুগকে প্রথম ধাতুর যুগ হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করা হয়। জানা যায়, খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ৩০০০ অব্দের কাছাকাছি সময়ে প্রাচীন নিকটপ্রাচ্যে এ যুগের সূচনা হয়। আর খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ১২০০ অব্দে লৌহ আবিষ্কারের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে এ যুগের অবসান ঘটে। ব্রোঞ্জ যুগে মানুষ সমুদ্রপথে যাতায়াতের জন্য আকাশের তারা দেখে দিক নির্ণয় করত।
