উচ্চ তাপ ও চাপের প্রভাবে একই যৌগের অসংখ্য অণু পরস্পরের সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়ে বৃহৎ আনবিক ভরবিশিষ্ট নতুন যৌগের অণু গঠন করে। যেসব ক্ষুদ্র অণু যুক্ত হয়, তাদের প্রত্যেককে মানোমার এবং যে বৃহৎ নতুন অণু উৎপন্ন হয়, তাকে পলিমার বলে। যে বিক্রিয়ায় অসংখ্য মনোমার থেকে পলিমার উৎপন্ন হয় তাকে পলিমারকরণ বিক্রিয়া বলে। যেমন: ইথিনের অসংখ্য অণু পলিমার চেইন বিক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে একত্রিত হয়ে পলিথিন উৎপন্ন হয় ।
