বরিশালের প্রাচীন নাম ছিল চন্দ্রদ্বীপ/ বাকেরগঞ্জ। নদিয়া ছিল কুষ্টিয়ার পূর্বনাম। শাহবাজপুর ছিল বর্তমান ভোলা জেলার প্রাচীন নাম। অন্যদিকে প্রাচীন বাংলার জনপদের নাম ছিল হরিকেল বর্তমান সিলেট ও চট্টগ্রামের অংশবিশেষ ছিল ।
