If the average (arithmetic mean) of 5 consecutive numbers is 12 , what is the sum if the least and the greatest of the integers?

Let the consecutive integers be n, (n + 1), (n + 2), (n + 3) and (n + 4) respectively.
So, n + (n + 1) + (n + 2) + (n + 3) + (n + 4) = 12 x 5
or, 5n + 10 = 60
or, 5n = 60 - 10
or, n = 50 / 5 = 10.
So, the least number is 10 and the greatest number is (10 + 4 = 14). Their sum = 10 + 14 = 24.
