বিশ শতকের শুরুর দিকে কলকাতার শিক্ষিত মানুষেরা তাদের কথ্য ভাষাকে লেখ্য রুপ দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করেন। এই রীতিতে তৎসম শব্দের ব্যবহার কমতে থাকে এবং এটি চলিত রীতি নামে পরিচিতি পায়। বিশ শতকের মাঝামাঝিতে এটি সাধু রীতির স্থান দখল করে। একুশ শতকের শুরুতে এটি প্রমিত রীতি নামে পরিচিতি পায়। প্রমিত রীতিকে মান রীতি নামেও জানা যায়।
